Moremi / Mababe Expedition Camping Safari

6 Nights / 7 Days

This 6 night mobile camping journey, with flights in and out of each camp, will take you through two of Botswana’s famous regions while staying in stylish tented camps. Moremi Game Reserve is situated in the eastern corner of the Okavango Delta and is one of the most beautiful and varied reserves found on the African continent with huge concentrations of wildlife and incredible scenery. The reserve consists of both swamped areas and dry-land areas. The Mababe Private Reserve is in the Mababe Depression; a shallow flood plain area where the Khwai River flows out surrounded by cathedral forests and mopane shrub. Being a private reserve means off road driving, night drives, safari walks and limited numbers of vehicles.

Highlights

  • 6-night mobile camping safari in Botswana.

  • Visit Moremi and Mababe Private Reserve.

  • Scenic charter flights included.

  • Game drives in rich wildlife areas.

  • Mokoro trip on the Khwai channels.

  • Night drives and seasonal walks in Mababe.

Day 1- 3 Xakanaxa, Moremi Game Reserve

After your arrival at Maun International Airport you will be met by Mack Air for your charter flight at approximately 14h00 to the Xakanaxa airstrip in Moremi Game Reserve where you will be met by your guide.

Spending your first three nights camping in the Xakanaxa region, you explore the surrounding wilderness on game drives during the day. Moremi lies on the eastern extremity of the Okavango Delta. Habitats here range from wide-open floodplains, marshes, lagoons, papyrus fringed channels, vast stands of Miscanthus and Phragmites, woodland and savannah. Moremi is amongst the best game reserves in Africa for viewing the endangered African wild dog. Xakanaxa is home to a resident herd of several hundred buffalo whose range covers the territories of at least 4 prides of lion which may often be seen flanking the ever moving herd. Breeding herds of elephant move between their browsing areas in the mopane forests and the fresh water of the Okavango. Red lechwe are one of the more unusual antelope species and commonly found here.

Day 3 – 6 Mababe Private Reserve, Mababe Depression

Following an early morning breakfast you take a slow drive through Moremi Game Reserve north-east towards the Khwai and Mababe Areas. On this day between camps you will do a mokoro excursion in the calmer back-waters of the Khwai and Mbudi channels, it is one of the classic Botswana experiences and wildlife and birdlife is often encountered along the channel edges.

The Manuchira Channel is known as the Khwai River at its eastern most extremity. The day’s journey follows this water course, with the track weaving from the riverside and floodplains into the mopane veld and the woodlands through to the Mababe Private Reserve where you camp on the banks of the Khwai River before it flows out and into the Mababe Depression. You pass the magnificent Dombo Hippo Pools in the morning stopping to enjoy the scenery and the antics of the resident hippo and shall game drive through Khwai until you reach Mababe.
The south-east mopane veld is home to mostly breeding herds of elephant whilst the more northern reaches of Mababe is home to some impressive old bulls. The mature bulls revel in the cool waters of the Khwai River and are far more approachable while drinking and bathing than the breeding herds. The river has an unusually high density of hippo as well as some huge crocodile.

Leopard- (western part of NG41), cheetah, serval and lion are common predators along this route and both Xakanaxa as well as Mababe are included in the home ranges of different packs of wild dog. General game includes southern giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, tsessebe and red lechwe with roan and sable antelope being less common residents.

We spend the following two nights camping at an exclusive campsite in the Mababe concession that has strict vehicle limits, exploring the river banks, Kalahari shrub to the east, cathedral mopane to the south on game drives both during the day and at night. Drives after dark with spotlights offers you an opportunity to experience some of the nocturnal animals that are rarely encountered during the day.

You will also have the opportunity to explore the surrounding wilderness on foot (please note that this activity is seasonal based on rains and grass height, your guide will determine the safety of walking in Mababe) to enjoy an up close and personal encounter with Botswana’s flora and fauna. It is important to note that night drives and guided walks are not permitted within the national parks and reserves. These activities are conducted outside the boundaries of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Mababe Private Reserve.

Northern Highlights Expedition

10 Nights / 11 Days

DAY 1-2 MOREMI GAME

This 10 night mobile camping journey will take you through Botswana’s famous regions. Moremi Game Reserve is situated in the eastern corner of the Okavango Delta and is one of the most beautiful and varied reserves found on the African continent with huge concentrations of wildlife and incredible scenery. The reserve consists of both swamped areas and dry-land areas. The Savute is characterised by the Savute Marsh, the Savute Channel and the Hills. During morning and late afternoon drives your guide will alternate between these areas. Anything can happen on the Savute Marsh.

The Chobe National Park is one of Africa’s finest game sanctuaries. Situated in the far north of Botswana, Chobe encompasses a wide variety of diverse habitats offering extreme contrasts and is home to a breath-taking variety of animals and birds.

Our Guide will explain to you how this complex ecosystem is so self-sustaining year after year.

Your safari representative will be there to welcome you on arrival at Maun Airport. The exact departure time from Maun Airport will be advised closer to the time, as this depends on the commercial airlines flight schedules. Expect to leave Maun and begin your journey around lunchtime where you head to Moremi Game Reserve, stopping for a picnic lunch en-route, and arriving at your campsite in time for sundowners. Spending your first two nights camping in the Xakanaxa / 3rd Bridge region, you explore the surrounding wilderness on game drives during the day. The Moremi Game Reserve forms part of the unique ecosystem called the Okavango Delta and Moremi covers up to one-third of the Okavango. The total area of the Okavango covers up to 18 000 square kilometres of which the Moremi Game Reserve is 5000 square kilometers.

DAY 3-5 KHWAI CONCESSION  OKAVANGO DELTA

Following an early breakfast, you pack camp and continue your journey to Khwai, stopping for a picnic lunch en-route. The Khwai River forms a boundary between the reserve and the community area. You spend the next three nights camping at a campsite in the community area, exploring the Khwai floodplains on game drives both during the day and at night. Here, you will also enjoy a 2 ½ hour Mokoro trip (dug-out canoe)exploring the water ways of Khwai which is the most eastern reach of the Okavango river system. Exploring after dark with spotlights offers you a unique opportunity to experience some of the nocturnal animals that are rarely encountered during the day. It is important to note that night drives are not permitted within the national parks and reserves. These activities are conducted outside the boundaries of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Khwai community area.

Our Guide will explain to you how this complex ecosystem is so self-sustaining year after year.

Day 5-6 SAVUTI  CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

You head further north en-route to Chobe National Park, where you spend the following three nights camping in a wilderness campsite in the Savute region, exploring the desert-like landscape of game drives. The Savute Channel and Marsh have a fickle water supply as the channel flows and stops for no visible reason but the animals are either drawn to the channel or the waterholes around the region. Savute has for the last 30 years been an extremely dry area and lately its claim to fame has been the lion and elephant interaction as they come for the few drops of water that remain in the waterholes. These dynamics are ever-changing with the unpredictable supply of water …who knows what will happen

DAY 9-10 – CHOBE RIVER FRONT, CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

Leaving this parched landscape, you continue your journey north to the contrasting Chobe region of the park. You spend the last two nights camping in a wilderness campsite near the Chobe River, exploring the riverbanks and surrounding flood plains on game drives. Fish Eagle Safari

5 Nights / 6 Days

This 5 night mobile camping journey will take you through Botswana’s famous regions; Moremi Game Reserve is situated in the eastern corner of the Okavango Delta and is one of the most beautiful and varied reserves found on the African continent with huge concentrations of wildlife and incredible scenery. The reserve consists of both swamped areas and dry-land areas. The Khwai Reserve is famous for elephants and excellent predators – and wonderful floodplains.

Departures are on set dates and group sizes start with a minimum of 2 people and up to 12 – this is a scheduled group safari where you join other people that are booked on it although it can be privatised if you have a suitable group. You have your own safari vehicle and professional guide and a backup team of driver, cook and camp assistant who drive in a separate vehicle. On safari the camp staff attend to your comfort by erecting and dismantling the camp and preparing delicious meals cooked on an open fire. Accommodation is in ensuite meru style tents complete with your own bucket shower and bush loo, staff prepare delicious meals throughout your safari and a camp assistant to take care of all camp duties.

DAY 1-2 MOREMI GAME RESERVE

We will be there to give you a warm Botswana welcome when you land at Maun Airport. You will then meet your pilot for a stunning light aircraft transfer over the Okavango Delta and Chief’s Island. This flight gives you a fish eagle’s eye view of this amazing ecosystem. When you land at your remote bush airstrip within the Moremi Game Reserve, your guide will be waiting to transfer you to your mobile camp with a game drive en route. After meeting the camp team and settling in, the magic of a mobile camp becomes apparent as you find yourself in the wilderness with the sunset and drinks around the fire before a starlit dinner and a great night’s rest after falling asleep to the sounds of the African bush. Spending your first two nights camping in the Xakanaxa / Third Bridge area, you explore the surrounding wilderness on game drives during the day. The Moremi Game Reserve protects around a third of the entire Okavango Delta ecosystem – some 5 000km2 (1 930 square miles).

DAY 3-5 KHWAI CONCESSION OKAVANGO DELTA

Following an early breakfast you continue your journey to Khwai, stopping for a picnic lunch en-route. The Khwai River forms a boundary between the reserve and the community area. You spend the next three nights camping at a campsite in the community area, exploring the Khwai floodplains on game drives both during the day and at night. Here, you will also enjoy a 2 ½ hour Mokoro trip exploring the water ways of Khwai which is the most eastern reach of the Okavango river system. Exploring after dark with spotlights offers you a unique opportunity to experience some of the nocturnal animals that are rarely encountered during the day. It is important to note that night drives are not permitted within the national parks and reserves. These activities are conducted outside the boundaries of the Moremi Game Reserve in the Khwai Concession.
